Tips & Requirements

1. Your photo will only show your head and shoulders. Be sure to wear something not low cut since it will make it look like you have no clothes on in your photo.
2. You cannot wear your glasses for your photo.
3. You cannot wear anything on your head – no hat, headband or scarf. Note: if you wear religious headgear on a daily basis, you are allowed to wear it in your passport photo as long as your face is clearly visible. You’ll need to submit a letter explaining your religious headgear.
4. Don’t wear a uniform of any kind.
5. Business attire or a collared shirt is perfect. This isn’t a State Department rule but if you ever need to show your passport for a business visa or to a new employer as part of your paperwork, you’ll be glad that your passport photo supports your professional image.
6. Do consider wearing a color other than black or white since the background is white for your photo.
7. Make-up or not? Photo retouching isn’t allowed in passport photos. Not even if you woke up with a great big zit the morning of your session. Wear your makeup a little heavier than normal. Even the guys can use a bit of concealer for under-eye circles.
8. No hair should cover your eyes or eyebrows. Long hair should be behind the shoulders. Don’t wear large hair bows or other headgear.
9. The pose. You should be sitting strait forward with a neutral expression but not grim. You are not allowed a large grin but you can still smile with your eyes.
